Dr. Ishita Dey

Professor, South Asian University

Dr. Ishita Dey is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, South Asian University, Delhi. Her research interests are migration, labor, food, and senses. She has co-anchored an art research project on Smells of the city with a focus on Delhi supported by Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi. She has been working on the life of sweets and sweetness in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Her work on sweets has been published in The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, journals such as Gastronomica, International Journal of South Asian Studies, and edited volumes Farm to Fingers: The Culture and Politics of Food in Contemporary India. She has curated a module on Sweet Traditions in Bengal for Sahapedia (https://www.sahapedia.org/sweet-traditions-of-bengal) and currently working towards her manuscript, which is an ethnographic account of sweetness across Epar and Opar Bangla based on her decade long fieldwork in select districts and divisions in West Bengal and Bangladesh.
